The tightened security measures at all the royal palaces that followed the break-in also caused a problem for the Queen. Unable to sleep one night, the Monarch decided to take a stroll in Buckingham Palace’s gardens, her preferred remedy for insomnia. A zealous security guard saw someone moving in the shadows. ‘Who’s there?’ he challenged, when a familiar figure stepped out into the light.

‘Bloody hell, Your Majesty!’ exclaimed the surprised guard. ‘I nearly shot you.’ He swiftly apologized for his language.

The Queen was unruffled by the language or loaded gun, quipping, ‘That’s quite all right. Next time I’ll ring through beforehand, so you don’t have to shoot me.’
